About Seals' Landing

Seals’ Landing is a historic 100-year-old cottage that sits on the Alsea Bay in Waldport, Oregon.  A quiet little coastal town (population 1,700) Waldport's history centers on timber and fishing industries, and more recently tourism.  The Port of Alsea is an active fishing port and only fishing boats, non-recreational boats, are allowed on the waters of the bay.

The cottage has a raised seating deck out by the sea wall and quiet safe beach for small children.  At low tide you can crab, clam, and fish right in front of the cottage.  Fishermen say that we have the best location in the bay for crabs, as the deep channel of the Alsea River is right in front of the cottage.

*Note - Recreational fishing licenses can be purchased at the grocery store or hardware store for a nominal fee.

Waldport is known for 8 miles of expansive sandy beaches that sit just south of town.  From Seals Landing, at low tide, you can easily access the northmost point of the large sandy beaches by way of a 5-7-minute walk from the cottage.  There are also public access points every few miles. All beaches in Oregon are public, but our guests have private access, and the public conversely must access beach from a public access point.  We find this secluded beach quiet and mostly used by locals for fishing after work hours.  **Please see Page for Beaches and Parks for details on surrounding beaches.

Seals’ Landing is amply named for the frequency by which we see harbor seals.  During the salmon runs we routinely see 15-20 seals from our beach chasing the salmon up the Alsea River channel that runs right in front of the cottage.  At low tide hundreds of seals seek refuge and rest on the sand bars of the bay.

The cottage has undergone a complete renovation (including the gardens)  and we are ready for guests.

About Your Host

Ellen Nieslanik has lived and worked in productive agriculture her entire life, raising her three children on the same Colorado ranch where she was brought up. Ellen married her childhood friend Joe Nieslanik and together they raised sheep in Colorado and Oregon until 2017 when Ellen's health pushed them to look for ways to spend retirement in a less physically demanding industry.

Ellen continues to nurture her her ties to agriculture and occasionally raises a litter of puppies, but Seals' Landing is now Ellen's "farm to tend". Purchased in November 2020, the property has been completely renovated while preserving as much of the 101 year old original cottage as possible.  The property is owned jointly Ellen's husband Joe, his sister Bert and her wife Merce.  The sea air has worked wonders with Ellen's health issues. For now Ellen lives here at sea level and her husband Joe remains in Colorado, but visits as often as possible. The goal with Seals' Landing is to open our home/life on the coast to you and to share part of this slice of heaven.

To learn more about Ellen, check out her blog at: https://ellennieslanik.wixsite.com/tendingtheherd. Ellen writes about life lessons learned while raising sheep, ducks dogs and doves -- all the while raising her family.  This blog is started for the sole purpose of sharing those lessons and recording a record for her family and now will include some reflective lessons learned in the serenity of the Oregon coast.
